Meet the Sew What? and Rent What? Staff, Part 22: Kim

By |September 24th, 2018|Company, Rent What Team, Sew What Team|1 Comment

For our next installment of “Meet The Staff”, I am very happy to be able to officially introduce you to an incredibly important—and very much appreciated—member of our Sew What? / Rent What? family, Kim Curran. We’ve been extremely lucky to add Kim to the “Whatter Family” a few years ago as our Senior Purchasing Agent, and it’s been a perfect match ever since. Her diverse background as a buyer has immensely helped with her transition into this slightly different field of “theatrical fabric purchasing”, giving her an invaluable insight and perspective on successful vendor relations, and in turn, what we need to help make this company run smoothly—fabric! Please take a moment to read a little more about Kim, and learn why we are so thrilled to have her as an absolutely vital member of the SW team. ?

When did you first start at Sew What? What were you originally hired to do, and how have your duties changed since working here?

I started in May of 2015 as the Sew What Purchasing Agent, and have remained in that position ever since.

If you could take a vacation to anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

It would definitely be Italy—I love the food……All of the food! Pasta, fish, desserts, and everything in between. ?

What kind of work did you do before coming to Sew What?

I was a sporting goods buyer for a major national sporting goods chain—mostly focusing on fitness products of all kinds.

Do you have a special talent?

I love to dabble in baking and cooking of all varieties—and I try to use my powers for good and not evil. (my colleagues seem happy to take on my baking experiments) 😉

What is your favorite memory/circumstance/event from being part of the Sew What? family?

My husband and I had the most wonderful time attending a company dinner at the Bull Pen last year. It was a sit-down dinner at a spectacular steak house with much of the company there, and their spouses and significant others. And it was such a blast!

What is your favorite sports team/TV Show/Book/Movie?

I am not too die-hard of a fan for any particular sports team…. But I AM a huge fan of all kinds of cooking programs—especially the reality competition cooking shows. Give me some Chopped, Iron Chef, Hell’s Kitchen, or any baking contest on TV and I’m there!

What are some of your hobbies?

I love to cook—if you haven’t been able to tell by now! Main courses, desserts, snacks, and anything else that sounds yummy. My husband and I have newly started experimenting with Blue Apron (home delivered ingredients and recipes) which has really gotten me to wear my “chef hat” more than ever. It’s been a fun way for us to try out interesting new styles of food and cooking that we normally probably never would have done on our own.

Plus—more importantly–this summer we also added a new member to our family…our new puppy Stella! She’s a 7-month-old Chiweenie puppy (Chihuahua and Dachshund mix), and she has been the light of our life since we brought her home to be our furr-ever little girl. She has so much contagious energy, so much excitement over everything, and gives so much love to us both–and everyone she meets. It has been so much fun adding her to our family! ?

What project have you worked on recently that was interesting or challenging?

The most challenging aspect of my job is the short turnaround time we have for some of the orders for our clients—the tours especially. Many things can “go wrong” when it comes to procuring the exact right substrates that our clients are requesting, such as material availability, damages to the fabrics we receive, delays in shipping, size inaccuracies, etc. Thankfully, we have an amazing team here that will do everything they can to find a way to work through any issues that might come up in order to be able to get our clients the beautiful custom theatrical stage draperies that they are requesting — how they want them, and on time.

Anything more about your time here at SW?

There is a strong feeling of having a second family here at Sew What, Inc., which is just so nice to experience every day!

Our rental drapery is not just suitable for large scale productions or long-term rock tours…. They are being utilized for numerous special events for our amazing clients, of all kinds and sizes. It always amazes us what a huge impact just simply adding a few striking rental theatrical stage drapes can have on the success of an event’s overall motif. This past June, we were excited to work with Derek Davis at Westside Family Church in Lenexa, Kansas on one of these types of really fun happenings at their church. They were looking to fashion an authentic movie theater “look and feel” in one of their huge auditoriums for a month-long series of movies and videos that they would be offering their congregation several weeks this summer.

Derek knew that building a simple, yet dramatic, proscenium for their “At The Movies” summer event would add a really distinctive touch to the overall movie motif they were trying to create for their eager and excited audiences. Using some of our velvety rental Red IFR Super-vel Pre-Pleated Drapery legs and a perfectly matching Pre-Pleated Red IFR Super-vel border, they were able to accomplish this design beautifully. Our Rockin’ Red Drapery Collection has a huge assortment of rental drapes to choose from, for every time of production, concert, graduation ceremony, convention, tour, and special event you can think of! Made up of Austrians, Venetians, Backdrops, Pleated Legs, Bi-Parting Grand Stage Drapes, Pipe Pocket Drapery, and Swags galore, this extremely unique assemblage of rental drapes can help turn your event into a true success! Completely Enthrall Your Audiences With Rental Traveler Track And Traveler Stage Drapes

By |June 26th, 2018|Products|1 Comment

One of the most captivating moments of any big performance or concert is when the house lights dim, the stage is lit, and the gorgeous grand stage drapes start to part…..The instant that the stage is revealed and the band, artist, or performers are showcased, that’s when the audience goes really wild! Employing theatrical traveler track is a fantastic way to get this eye-catching effect— easy to operate, and always gives your design dramatic results. Renting beautiful grand stage curtains from Rent What? Inc. is the perfect place to start—we have a variety of sublime traveler drapes to give your event or concert the most decadent look (like our magnificent Crimson Cabaret and exquisite Smoky Pearl Grand Stage Drapes, both from our Timeless and Traditional Drapery Collection). But what about the traveler track…?

It may not always be economical to purchase all the stage curtain track hardware you need, especially when you aren’t sure how often it will be used, nor what the space dimensions will possibly be on future events (for tours in particular). Renting theatrical traveler track is a terrific option for many of our clients who want the excitement of having stage curtain track and traveler track drapery, but perhaps don’t have the permanent venue to showcase it. At Rent What? Inc, we’re proud to feature a full complement of superior-quality American-made curtain tracks by ADC, one of the premier manufacturers of theatrical curtain transport systems and the only brand that has won UL approval. Available from Rent What? Inc. as a rental from the most basic manual walk along system to a more intricate rope pull system (for single pull and bi-parting travelers), ADC tracks assure a moving performance at the highest standards.

Maybe a little nervous about setting up the track on-site at your venue? At Rent What?, we have developed a set of easy instructions available for installing our rental bi-parting and side-parting traveler track. We spent quite a bit of time looking at the various resources available to help with the install process and felt that this was an area where clients might have the most questions. We have tried our new instruction set with a variety of clients and have been told that they are “spot on” for helping cut to the chase in terms of everything from rope threading to the carrier and end pulley placements. They are great because they’re written for the “layperson,” and even include pictures to better demonstrate each step along the way.

The perfect complement to our straightforward, undemanding rental traveler track are stunning grand stage traveler rental draperies from our Specialty Drapery Collections. Contact one of our drapery experts today to have them help you find the exact right look and design for your upcoming stage production or concert tour, using a combination of our rental traveler drapes and theater track that can be shipped directly to any venue in the country for your added ease and convenience.

Kabuki Solenoid System Truly Astounds Spectators At Dance Competition

By |June 4th, 2018|Products, Projects|1 Comment

One of the most popular—and dramatic—special effects that our clients love to use time and time again for their special “reveals” are our rental Kabuki Solenoid Systems. Extremely straightforward to set up and execute, all you have to do is hang your soft goods from our solenoid heads, press a button, and watch the audience go wild when the drapes drop to the floor in a spectacular moment of flair. This is often used to reveal the band or some other wonderful surprise that has been hiding on stage the whole time. Originally these systems were primarily used for bands on stage wanting to add some excitement to an opening number…or be used as an effective way to add some “punch” to a special song. We have been renting these systems out for years in that capacity. However, more and more they are being requested to be used for special events and productions that we never would have imagined!

Our innovative clients at USC Zeher Dance Group recently rented our system for a series of dance performances at competitions that helped them with an important aspect of their truly unique AV program, which wholly captivated their audiences. Utilizing our lightweight, easy-to-install, and highly dependable 6-head Kabu-Key Solenoid System, they used our kabuki kit to drop some of their own soft goods during a powerful and exciting part of the dance troupe’s performance, much to the amazement and delight of the hundreds of people watching at the competition. These kits are affordable to be used at all kinds of shows and special events, and can also be shipped anywhere in the country. They are a surefire way to make a completely unforgettable experience for your audience, as you can see in the video clip below. Our rental solenoid systems can be used with your own draperies, or you can use one of our kabuki-ready rental drapes or custom-built curtains for your unique event. Let our team of theatrical drapery experts help you design an incredible stage design at your upcoming exceptional production, too!
