Creative Blend Of Rental Drapes Help To Build A Spectacular Stage

By |July 15th, 2019|Clients, Products, Projects|1 Comment

Sometimes the most remarkable staging can come to life beautifully when you are able to “let go” of a strict, rigid design scheme, and allow for a more “fluid” style of design instead. Multiple venues on a tour can mean many different sized stages, prosceniums, and audiences—so having drapes that can be flexible and versatile is absolutely crucial to being able to arrange your stage’s layout successfully from show to show. Furthermore, combining fabrics from multiple Specialty Rental Drapery Collections is an easy and fabulous way to build a completely unique and memorable look, time and time again.

Steppin' Out

A stunning example of these concepts is the incredible tour design fashioned for the unparalleled Joe Jackson Four Decades Tourwith unforgettable concerts for this legendary English musician and Grammy Winning singer-songwriter taking place around the globe (from January of this year straight through until the Fall). With brilliant people like world-renowned Lighting Director Chaz Martin and the truly remarkable Tour Manager Keith Anderson creating the overall stage appearance for this tour, we knew that the outcome of this design would be nothing less than extraordinary.

Starting with some striking Pewter Textura pre-pleated drapery legs from our Timeless and Traditional Collection, they were able to swag and swathe their stage with gorgeous strips of shimmery, metallic shades of silver. With Chaz’s skillfull handiwork, this lightweight, IFR, tour-friendly fabric showcases his outstanding theatrical colorful lighting like a dream, helping to further delight and excite their eager audiences from one song to the next. Next, Keith wanted to also enhance the stage’s look with some additional texture and a pop of vibrant color by adding a magnificent Red Supervel Swagged Border and a couple Red Supervel pleated drapery legs from our Rockin’ Red Drapery Collection. These distinguished curtains framed the stage in a truly exceptional way. This velvety IFR material was the perfect complement for the vibe of the tour, and since it has an almost “crushed” nap to it is not only exceedingly tour friendly but also is able to be lit up with colorful theatrical lighting elements just as splendidly as the Textura is.

Because each venue has a slightly different size and shape to it, their tour design team is being ultra-creative with the fashion to which they are swagging and festooning their stages….giving each audience an entirely one-of-a-kind experience. Check out our new Flickr gallery from some pretty talented band photographers to see just how dazzling and impressive these stage designs have turned out.  We have been sincerely privileged to work with Chaz and Keith on this monumental tour (and on previous Joe Jackson tours for several years now), and are always eager to see what outstanding stage design concept they come up with next. We’d love to assist you with coming up with a distinct look for your own upcoming special event motif, too—contact one of our sales reps today to find out which rental curtain, custom drape, or perhaps a combination of both will help your design vision become a reality!

Pewter Textura Drapes Helped Set Magnificent Stage For Talented Tenor

By |December 5th, 2018|Products, Projects|1 Comment

Some of our clients travel to America for a single big event or concert, yet still want to be able to build an utterly spectacular stage design for their special production. Talking with one of our drapery experts, and then renting drapes from our Drapery Rental Collections, is the perfect place to start as we can help you get from design vision to remarkable stage design reality. Recently we were honored to be able to work with the attentive Set Designer Leigh Michal who was helping organize one of these special shows here in Southern California for the gifted, up-and-coming classical English tenor, Jonathan Antoine. Rising to fame as one half of the duo “Jonathan and Charlotte” on Britain’s Got Talent, he has subsequently gone on to a successful solo career and is gearing up for more even concerts around the world to help satiate his enthusiastic fan base, who like to call themselves “Fantoines”.

Since this specific concert was a “one-off” event (and his first solo performance here in the U.S.), they wanted to be able to use some of our gorgeous and eclectic rental drapery to help create a mesmerizing atmosphere, which would also blend seamlessly with Jonathan’s velvety vocal tones and the 10 piece orchestral players on stage. Consulting with the brilliant local Production Manager Bob Murray with Vector Management/ELEV8 Global Entertainment, their team aimed to have stage curtains that would be easy to work with, that would light up beautifully, and would give the stage a modern—yet timeless—look that would interweave with the concert’s overall elegant ambiance.

They decided to use a variety of our exquisite Pewter Textura rental drapes from our Timeless and Traditional Drapery Collection. Using a mixture of magnificent pre-pleated legs and striking swagettes in various sizes, they were able to build an absolutely stunning stage design that worked superbly from one song to the next. With the gifted Dan Creasey from Congo Designs as the concert’s inspired Lighting Designer, they were able to fashion an exclusive and memorable motif for each and every part of the concert that left the audience wanting more.

Photographed exceptionally by the illustrious photographer Bjarne Hemmingson (who takes photos at many of Jonathan’s concerts and traveled all the way from Denmark to capture some amazing images from this one, too) you can see how the combination of drapery and lighting helped give this stage design a truly breathtaking look. Adding to the mix the extraordinary singing skills of Jonathan, and it was clear to see that this impressive concert was a true success. We were thrilled to be able to work with this artistic team to help give this show a completely unique appearance, and we would likewise love to help YOU create a one-of-a-kind look for your upcoming special event, too!

Another Fabulous SW Thanksgiving–With A Twist

By |December 3rd, 2018|Rent What Team, Sew What Team|1 Comment

Each year the entire RW?/SW? staff looks forward to our company-shared meal together to give thanks for all of the hard work everyone has put in during the extremely busy summer touring season, the hectic fall school productions and trade shows, gearing up for a multitude of winter holiday-themed custom and rental orders, and everything in between. Thanksgiving may have already come and gone, but the warm memories of the remarkably scrumptious food still live on in our hearts (and waistlines!).

For Thanksgiving this year, our company’s generous owners Megan and Adam Duckett decided to delight the entire staff with something a little different–a delicious catered Italian meal (from a nearby local mom-and-pop restaurant) that was absolutely fit for royalty. We had rich and creamy fettucine alfredo, savory and hearty penne marinara, mouthwateringly cheesy chicken parmigiana, crisp and crunchy Caesar and garden salads, and the softest Italian bread you’ve ever tasted to help soak it all up. Sharing this meal and having some lively conversations were a great way to connect with one another in a way that we don’t always have the opportunity to during the work week.

We then topped off this meal in the most amazing way possible—with desserts of ALL KINDS that were brought in by the employees themselves. Everyone relished a combination of homemade fudgy brownies, yummy pumpkin cupcakes and pies, tasty flans and cheesecakes, light and flakey cookies and madeleines, sweet pound cakes in a variety of flavors, and what has definitely become a staff favorite at company occasions like this one—a heaping platter of fresh bionico (made up of a variety of cut up fresh fruit, heavy cream, granola, raisins, and shaved coconut….In two words, it is simply pure bliss).  😉

It’s always nice to take a moment and realize all of the reasons we have to be grateful this year—especially in light of all of the incredible hardships that many of our fellow Southern Californians are experiencing right now. We are very thankful that we get to work in with a fantastic, family-oriented company that spoils us with these delectable treats on all kinds of special occasions. We are tremendously thankful for both our amazing new and long-time-loyal clients who help push us to stay at the very top of the game in this always-evolving industry. And we are truly thankful for one another—working with such a wonderfully talented team of smart, kind, generous, and hard-working individuals is not something that we take for granted, not for one single minute. Having everyone get to sit and enjoy a meal together—including a few beloved employees that no longer work for SW—was a terrific way for us to be able to show sincere appreciation for one another.

Exquisite Rental Drapes Help Create Memorable Stage Design For Holiday Production

By |October 15th, 2018|Products, Projects|2 Comments

Living in Southern California affords us many wonderful benefits, one of which being the gloriously warm weather that we experience much of the year. We really love having our warehouse and main office in the Southeast Los Angeles area, but sometimes with the sun shining so brightly outside we fail to realize that the holidays are quickly approaching. I recently came across these fabulous photos that really helped showcase one of the magnificent types of stage designs that our clients can create during the holiday season, using curtains from our eclectic Rental Drapery Collections.

We loved working last winter with the supremely talented event designer, Art Arellanes (from Arcadio Productions), on the yearly marvelous holiday production at Hope Chapel in Hermosa Beach. He had his own gorgeous “crystal beaded” string drapes that he wanted to flank each side of the stage, but he wanted to enhance the charm and elegance of the overall look with a few added main stage drapes, too. He and his team were able to build this incredibly remarkable stage by inserting an assortment of our charming sheer White Voile curtains from our Delightably White Rental Drapery Collection as absolutely perfect accent pieces.

Utilizing our exquisite 24’h x 9’w White Voile Pleated Legs as well as our striking White Voile Swaggettes in both 9’h x 12’w and 11’h x 16’w sizes, he was able to fashion several uniquely spectacular looks for this extraordinary yearly holiday event. Splashing dramatic and colorful theatrical lighting elements onto the drapes for the various performances gave the stage an absolutely stunning motif, thereby helping keep each part of the program both exciting and engaging for their parishioners.

We were thrilled with how completely enchanting this church’s “classic” Christmas-themed showcase turned out, and we are truly looking forward to providing rental and custom drapery for all of the upcoming holiday designs that our imaginative clients like Art come up with this year as well. Let us assist you with crafting a breathtaking, one-of-a-kind look for your holiday parties, concerts, productions, services, and soirees of all forms and sizes. Simply contact one of our representatives so that we can offer you beneficial advice, helpful suggestions, and beautiful options for creating your next special event design.

Meet the Sew What? and Rent What? Staff, Part 22: Kim

By |September 24th, 2018|Company, Rent What Team, Sew What Team|1 Comment

For our next installment of “Meet The Staff”, I am very happy to be able to officially introduce you to an incredibly important—and very much appreciated—member of our Sew What? / Rent What? family, Kim Curran. We’ve been extremely lucky to add Kim to the “Whatter Family” a few years ago as our Senior Purchasing Agent, and it’s been a perfect match ever since. Her diverse background as a buyer has immensely helped with her transition into this slightly different field of “theatrical fabric purchasing”, giving her an invaluable insight and perspective on successful vendor relations, and in turn, what we need to help make this company run smoothly—fabric! Please take a moment to read a little more about Kim, and learn why we are so thrilled to have her as an absolutely vital member of the SW team. 😊

When did you first start at Sew What? What were you originally hired to do, and how have your duties changed since working here?

I started in May of 2015 as the Sew What Purchasing Agent, and have remained in that position ever since.

If you could take a vacation to anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

It would definitely be Italy—I love the food……All of the food! Pasta, fish, desserts, and everything in between. 😉

What kind of work did you do before coming to Sew What?

I was a sporting goods buyer for a major national sporting goods chain—mostly focusing on fitness products of all kinds.

Do you have a special talent?

I love to dabble in baking and cooking of all varieties—and I try to use my powers for good and not evil. (my colleagues seem happy to take on my baking experiments) 😉

What is your favorite memory/circumstance/event from being part of the Sew What? family?

My husband and I had the most wonderful time attending a company dinner at the Bull Pen last year. It was a sit-down dinner at a spectacular steak house with much of the company there, and their spouses and significant others. And it was such a blast!

What is your favorite sports team/TV Show/Book/Movie?

I am not too die-hard of a fan for any particular sports team…. But I AM a huge fan of all kinds of cooking programs—especially the reality competition cooking shows. Give me some Chopped, Iron Chef, Hell’s Kitchen, or any baking contest on TV and I’m there!

What are some of your hobbies?

I love to cook—if you haven’t been able to tell by now! Main courses, desserts, snacks, and anything else that sounds yummy. My husband and I have newly started experimenting with Blue Apron (home delivered ingredients and recipes) which has really gotten me to wear my “chef hat” more than ever. It’s been a fun way for us to try out interesting new styles of food and cooking that we normally probably never would have done on our own.

Plus—more importantly–this summer we also added a new member to our family…our new puppy Stella! She’s a 7-month-old Chiweenie puppy (Chihuahua and Dachshund mix), and she has been the light of our life since we brought her home to be our furr-ever little girl. She has so much contagious energy, so much excitement over everything, and gives so much love to us both–and everyone she meets. It has been so much fun adding her to our family! 😊

What project have you worked on recently that was interesting or challenging?

The most challenging aspect of my job is the short turnaround time we have for some of the orders for our clients—the tours especially. Many things can “go wrong” when it comes to procuring the exact right substrates that our clients are requesting, such as material availability, damages to the fabrics we receive, delays in shipping, size inaccuracies, etc. Thankfully, we have an amazing team here that will do everything they can to find a way to work through any issues that might come up in order to be able to get our clients the beautiful custom theatrical stage draperies that they are requesting — how they want them, and on time.

Anything more about your time here at SW?

There is a strong feeling of having a second family here at Sew What, Inc., which is just so nice to experience every day!
