Old Dominion “Nashville Night in Buchanan” Silver Satin Drapes

By |November 14th, 2018|Clients, Products, Projects|1 Comment

This October, Old Dominion’s Matthew Ramsey brought a night of country music back to his hometown of Buchanan, Virginia. Along with Ramsey, this year’s “Nashville Night in Buchanan” also included bandmate Trevor Rosen and three of their songwriting partners, Josh Osborne, Matt Jenkins, and Shane McAnally. They were able to bring in 5,172 people to raise money for the local food bank, Buchanan Area Ministerial Association Food Pantry. Rent What? Inc. was so happy to be asked to work with Old Dominion again with our Silver Satin rental drapery.

We were honored when we were asked to be a part of another event with Old Dominion to help raise money for charity. We donated our stunning Silver Satin Drapes from our Rental Drapery Collection to create a beautiful backdrop for these performers. These drapes are some of the most reflective and striking materials imaginable and can change colors by splashing light onto them. Since they reflect light beautifully, they were able to create sensational color patterns and intensities for the event. With various drapery options from swags to Austrians to legs (and more), it lends itself to many different stage designs. This gave them the opportunity to create a distinctive look for the “Nashville Night in Buchanan.”

On top of raising money for the Buchanan Area Ministerial Association Food Pantry, Ramsey also announced that he has started a fund called My Hometown Fund, which gives directly back to the community. They have already raised around $50,000 for My Hometown Fund with the “Nashville Night in Buchanan.”

Our drapes from our Silver Satin Rental Drapery Collection looked amazing on stage for this event and they also layer beautifully with drapes from all of our dynamic drapery collections. Our Specialty Drapery Series’ make it easy to create dynamic look for any booth, show or exhibit by packaging an entire complement of matched drapery components in a single fabric theme. Each series contains a varied collection of drape sizes and styles that work together beautifully to create a fully designed scene. Contact our sales team today so we can help you get the perfect rental for your next show or event!

Why It Might Be A Better Idea To Rent Pipe and Base Hardware

By |November 5th, 2018|Products, Question of the Week|2 Comments

I recently posted a refresher blog article on some great reasons to purchase your own Pipe and Base (pb) hardware. And even though that is sensible much of the time, sometimes it’s just more valid to go ahead and rent your pb hardware when you need it. This post will be the other side to my buy vs. rent Pipe and Drape Hardware “conundrum”, exemplifying when it might be better to rent your pipe and base hardware rather than purchasing it outright.

INFREQUENCY OF THE EVENT/S: If you only produce 1 or 2 local trade shows or other similar types of special events a year, and never really know what your booth set-up or configuration will be, then it would be much more reasonable to just rent your pipe and base hardware and draping whenever you might need it. Counting on the exact inventory you already own to fulfill your requirements each and every time you need pipe and drape isn’t always reliable. This can put you in a tough spot at the last minute if you end up having to figure out what else you may need to supplement your own supply of goods. We can help you figure out exactly how much pipe and drape you will need and arrange the pb rental details for your event, helping to take all of the guess work out of it for you and thereby also helping to reduce your stress.

LOCATION OF THE EVENT/S: If you’re a local company, it’s often-times much less expensive to go ahead and rent everything you need for those occasional special events or productions that require pipe and drape. This is especially the case if you do not need us to ship it across the country for you, eliminating the worry of how the price of fuel could affect your overall rental price due to the ever-increasing cost of shipping via small parcel companies or freight forwarders.

SIZE OF YOUR COMPANY: Depending on the size of your company, sometimes it’s easier to rent everything when you need it, rather than having to figure a place out to store everything whenever another conference, convention, trade show, or special event comes around. Pipe and Drape can take up a lot of space to store it carefully so that it stays in good condition as long as possible. The hardware is also sometimes made up of an awkward or large sizes, shapes, or weights, so it can be extremely helpful to not have to worry about where you will be able to safely secure everything all year long.

SIZE OF THE EVENT/S: Renting is perfect for larger events in which you need a lot of pipe and base hardware and drapery that you wouldn’t normally ever need again. Especially if you know it’s going to be a massively large one-time event, in which you don’t want to have to worry about dealing with all of those hardware components after the event is over. It also makes sense to rent pipe and base hardware if the event is so small that you know you would end up needing a greater quantity for most of your typical-sized events in the future.

So basically, here are some rules of thumb that will help you decide if renting is the better way to go:

  • You only have one or two trade shows or events each year, and you never really know exactly what your configuration will be.
  • You are a local company where shipping is not an issue, and you can either come by and pick everything up from us or arrange to have us deliver/pickup everything for you here in town.
  • You are a smaller company and don’t necessarily have a safe place to securely store your own pipe and base hardware year-round, in between your trade shows and/or special events.
  • The configuration you are planning is so huge that you know you would probably never need that much pipe and drape again in the near future, or that it is so small of an event that you know you would most likely end up needing to supplement your supply for most of your typical-sized events down the line.

If these points applied to you, then it might be more practical for you to rent your pipe and base hardware so that you can reduce your worries about how to put everything together, where you will have to store it all year round, and how you would be able to maybe use it again in the future for a completely different event and configuration. Renting our pb hardware will give you the flexibility to have exactly what you want, where you want it, and for how long you will need it. Why It Might Be A Better Idea To Buy Pipe And Base Hardware

By |October 31st, 2018|Products, Question of the Week|1 Comment

We’ve already written about this subject a few times before, but it’s a question we still get asked all the time from our clients—“When is it better to rent, and when is it better to buy Pipe and Base (pb) Hardware for my upcoming trade show, event, tour, or production?” So I thought I’d rehash some of the advice and suggestions we like to give our clients so that they can make an informed decision on which might be the better option for their particular needs.  Of course there are always a lot of great reasons for each side of the argument! In this blog post though, I’d like to focus now on why it may be a better idea to purchase your own pb hardware. Then I will follow up in a future blog post with some advice for when it might be a better idea to rent pb hardware instead.

FREQUENCIES OF THE EVENTS: If you do multiple productions or trade shows each year, and often have similar pipe and drapery needs each time, then cost-wise it just makes more sense to go ahead and purchase your pb hardware. Renting them over and over again, can quickly become financially straining taking valuable funds away from your budget (that you could be using on having custom drapery made instead!). If you purchase the pb hardware that you will typically need from SW?, then you would have the exact size, quantity, and configurations every time you needed it, all year round. Then you could rent different types of pipe pocket drapery to create your distinctive look (in various colors, sizes, styles, fabrics). This will help you keep a fresh and unique appearance each time, without the added expense of having to pay for the rental of pb hardware, too.

CUSTOM DRAPING: Rent What? does not offer custom-made soft goods in our rental inventory, but this just happens to be a specialty of our sister company Sew What? If you wanted to have beautiful and completely one-of-a-kind soft goods made for your event (either with a digital print, or drapery in styles, colors, and fabrics that perfectly match your event’s motif), then you would ultimately have to rent the hardware each and every time you needed to be able to display it. If you possessed your own hardware, then you would be able to showcase your custom soft goods any time you would like to, without having to worry about availability of the rental hardware, too.

SHIPPING: People don’t always realize how extremely heavy pb hardware can be, especially the bases which can run anywhere between 13lbs and 62lbs, EACH, depending on your event’s own specific set-up. Shipping pipe and base hardware across the country over and over again can sometimes end up costing even more than the rental itself, which can really add up in the long run.

So in a nutshell, here are some rules of thumb that will help you decide if buying is the best way to go:

  • You tend to do smaller trade shows, and end up having a similar set up every time.
  • Your trade shows or events happen several times a year, and often in different parts of the country that would need everything to be shipped to and from.
  • You don’t always know exactly how long you’re going to need the hardware for.
  • You will need to have custom drapery built, which you know you’re going to want to hang up at different events throughout the year.
  • You can use the purchased carrying bags and dollies to keep everything stored together, and have a good location to keep everything safely secured.

If these points applied to you, then it would probably make more sense to purchase your pb hardware so that you can cut out as many unnecessary expenses as possible for every time you may need it. This will give you the flexibility and freedom to set up your Pipe and Drapery anytime, and anywhere, that you want. Do not hesitate to contact one of our sales reps today so that they can help you figure out the best choice for your own individual needs.

Meet the Staff–UPDATES! Andrea Garcia

By |October 29th, 2018|Company, Rent What Team, Sew What Team|1 Comment

Next in our Meet The Staff—UPDATES! Blog series is one of the most earnest, hardest working employees that this company has ever had, Andrea Garcia (formerly Andrea Fraser). She has worn numerous hats here at SW?, and we are so pleased to have had her recently “change hats” yet again into a role that she seemed truly destined for. Please take a moment and read a little bit about this extraordinary member of the Whatter’s family, Andrea!

What were you originally hired to do, and how have your duties/job descriptions changed since working here?

I was originally hired back in July of 2015 as a receptionist. As time went on my duties grew and I dabbled a little in purchasing and accounting, but where I really found a passion was for sales. I was given a very generous opportunity to join the sales staff in July of 2018…. and I have to be honest, I couldn’t be happier! I’m thoroughly enjoying this new position and couldn’t be more grateful for this opportunity to grow within this company and learn from everyone here.

What are some favorite memories/circumstances/events from being part of the Sew What? family?

I sincerely enjoy any function that we have here at Sew What?, Inc that involves getting the entire staff together to have a good time (and of course the delicious treats that often accompany such a gathering). 😉

My favorite recent memory is when we held a “White Elephant Gift Exchange” for Christmas last year. The silly presents everyone brought were often hysterical and cheeky, and it was just so much fun watching everyone practically “become kids again” for the holidays.

What project have you worked on recently that was interesting or challenging? What did you learn from it?

As a new member of the sales team I am learning a lot every single day. It’s been quite the adventure so far!

All of the office staff was recently given the incredible opportunity to work hands on with the warehouse staff. We were able to assist with measuring and cutting fabric, pinning drapery, and even QC-ing (in quality control) the drapes before they left our building. Undeniably, it was a crucial learning experience for all of us—especially for me as a beginner in this industry, but also for all of my considerably-experienced colleagues as well. Getting completely hands on with custom projects from start to finish was an invaluable and essential way for me to be able to better help and answer questions for my customers on a daily basis, and it was a fantastic experience getting to work with our tremendously talented warehouse staff, too!

Vibrant Colors Completely Brighten Up Sewing Room

By |October 23rd, 2018|Products, Projects|1 Comment

I love having a window that leads directly into our warehouse QC Area, as I never know what I’m going to spot the hard-working SW? crew diligently constructing out there for our wonderful clients’ upcoming events. Looking out there, it’s never the same view two days in a row! These past few days I kept noticing the most spectacularly gorgeous colors flashing in my peripheral vision and couldn’t contain my curiosity anymore—so I had to go investigate for myself what I was seeing.

It seems as it one of our clients was having us build for them numerous panels of breathtaking Poly Charmeuse Drapery for an upcoming special event they were having here in Southern California. This fabric is an extremely festive and popular substrate for special events especially, in that it has a lustrous, reflective finish, is super lightweight to hang, and is topically treated for Flame Retardancy so it’s well tested by fire marshals across the country.

In absolutely vivid, striking shades of purple, pink, and orange, our warehouse sewing department looked even more vibrant than it normally does. Watching our amazing team work on this job all the way from cutting, to sewing, to inspecting, and to packaging for shipping was a truly impressive sight to behold.

We love helping to provide our super-creative clientele with fabulous custom stage drapes for all of their special events, concert tours, stage productions, church services, trade shows, and everything in between. Contact one of our sales reps today so that we can help you to also construct the most breathtaking design imaginable—either with custom built curtains, rental stage drapes, or a combination of both!
