Creative Blend Of Rental Drapes Help To Build A Spectacular Stage

By |July 15th, 2019|Clients, Products, Projects|0 Comments

Sometimes the most remarkable staging can come to life beautifully when you are able to “let go” of a strict, rigid design scheme, and allow for a more “fluid” style of design instead. Multiple venues on a tour can mean many different sized stages, prosceniums, and audiences—so having drapes that can be flexible and versatile is absolutely crucial to being able to arrange your stage’s layout successfully from show to show. Furthermore, combining fabrics from multiple Specialty Rental Drapery Collections is an easy and fabulous way to build a completely unique and memorable look, time and time again.

Steppin' Out

A stunning example of these concepts is the incredible tour design fashioned for the unparalleled Joe Jackson Four Decades Tourwith unforgettable concerts for this legendary English musician and Grammy Winning singer-songwriter taking place around the globe (from January of this year straight through until the Fall). With brilliant people like world-renowned Lighting Director Chaz Martin and the truly remarkable Tour Manager Keith Anderson creating the overall stage appearance for this tour, we knew that the outcome of this design would be nothing less than extraordinary.

Starting with some striking Pewter Textura pre-pleated drapery legs from our Timeless and Traditional Collection, they were able to swag and swathe their stage with gorgeous strips of shimmery, metallic shades of silver. With Chaz’s skillfull handiwork, this lightweight, IFR, tour-friendly fabric showcases his outstanding theatrical colorful lighting like a dream, helping to further delight and excite their eager audiences from one song to the next. Next, Keith wanted to also enhance the stage’s look with some additional texture and a pop of vibrant color by adding a magnificent Red Supervel Swagged Border and a couple Red Supervel pleated drapery legs from our Rockin’ Red Drapery Collection. These distinguished curtains framed the stage in a truly exceptional way. This velvety IFR material was the perfect complement for the vibe of the tour, and since it has an almost “crushed” nap to it is not only exceedingly tour friendly but also is able to be lit up with colorful theatrical lighting elements just as splendidly as the Textura is.

Because each venue has a slightly different size and shape to it, their tour design team is being ultra-creative with the fashion to which they are swagging and festooning their stages….giving each audience an entirely one-of-a-kind experience. Check out our new Flickr gallery from some pretty talented band photographers to see just how dazzling and impressive these stage designs have turned out.  We have been sincerely privileged to work with Chaz and Keith on this monumental tour (and on previous Joe Jackson tours for several years now), and are always eager to see what outstanding stage design concept they come up with next. We’d love to assist you with coming up with a distinct look for your own upcoming special event motif, too—contact one of our sales reps today to find out which rental curtain, custom drape, or perhaps a combination of both will help your design vision become a reality!

Meet The Staff—UPDATES! – Rosalie

By |July 9th, 2019|Company, Rent What Team, Sew What Team|0 Comments

Next in our Meet The Staff—UPDATES! Blog series is someone who has been here for quite awhile, Rosalie Zigman. Even though she is physically here only part time, she still manages to get more accomplished than most people would in a full work week! We just love her to pieces, and appreciate all of her efforts on behalf of entire company every single day. Please take a moment and read a little bit about this exceptional member of the Whatter’s family, Rosalie!

What were you originally contracted to do, and how have your duties/job descriptions changed since working here?

I was originally contracted in March 2010 for a 6-week research project by Megan (Duckett, President and CEO of SW? Inc.). She wanted me to find and test new flame retardant fabrics for digital printing for the rapidly expanding company. I stayed on past this project though, and quickly moved into more “operational” duties by preparing customer flame certs and maintaining vendor (manufacturer) flame certs, so that everything stays completely up to date for our customers. The tours and productions (in particular) need to be sure that all of their shows’ drapery fabrics are up to code and have certification to be able to show to on-site fire marshals and venue staff whenever needed.

By mid-2017, I then segued into HR and Payroll duties, too—I love this role especially because I always get a lot of smiles when I hand out paychecks!

What are some favorite memories/circumstances/events from being part of the Sew What? family?

Not a single holiday or special event goes by without a celebration: usually involving food, and frequently gifts and festivities as well. “Whatters” love a good party, and Megan sincerely seems to enjoy seeing her staff happy. She is continually very generous with all of her employees, helping make everyone feel appreciated.

What project have you worked on recently that was interesting or challenging?

In any business there are tasks that fall by the wayside, or ideas that cannot be implemented because there is not always enough time or appropriate personnel… That is where I come in! Whenever there is a special project or assistance needed to accomplish a unique task, I am usually asked to help. From updating our rental drapery databases with current inventory, helping prepare quarterly sales tax reports, and everything in between—the variety keeps me on my toes! Whether it is getting fabric for our custom drapes tested and certified as flame retardant for European tours, or maintaining our US certifications for hundreds of rental curtains, borders, and other soft goods on a yearly basis, we take flame retardancy very seriously around here. And it shows…with the proper care and the meticulous procedures that we implement for each and every soft good that goes out our warehouse doors. I am very proud to be a part of this extremely important responsibility for our customers.

Anything more you would like to add about the development and evolution of RW/SW? Inc.?

Whatters are valued for what we bring to the table… and not just regarding food (although we DO love a good pot-luck!). When a position (a role or function) becomes available, Megan seems to utilize the attributes of her staff–their talents, skills, and interests–to provide opportunities and promote from within whenever possible. That is why there are still employees at SW? that have been working here for 10 years and longer!

It is the very idea that we are part of a family that seems to radiate into all aspects of the company’s business model, and thereby provides our customers with everything that is exceptional (“extreme” service, products, experiences, etc.), too. This makes SW?/RW? a successful and trusted source in this highly competitive industry, and also makes it a genuinely fun place to work!

Golden Drapes Help Enhance The Warm Ambiance Of Stage Design

By |July 1st, 2019|Clients, Products, Projects|0 Comments

It is always truly wonderful when we see our creative clients utilizing our rental drapery in a fashion that is just perfect for their own personal stage design. We love it when our curtains are able to give our clients’ event and production designs the right mood, the right look, the right texture, and the right overall ambiance. Recently we were thrilled to work with immensely skilled Production Manager Travis Bing, who was helping to craft some elements of the stage design for the 6 time Grammy, 4 time CMA, and 3 time ACM winning country star Kacey Musgraves’ highly anticipated international “Oh, What A World: Tour II”. Her shows were going to include both independent concerts around the US, Caribbean, Mexico and Canada, as well as performances at music festivals across the country all year long.

Kacey Musgraves - Palace Theatre St. Paul

Known for a progressive style, powerful ballads, and expertly crafted original song lyrics, Kacey really wanted a look for her tour that would be genuinely warm and inviting to her audiences (of all sizes). However, Travis and his team still wanted something versatile enough that they could light them up differently so that each segment of her show would appear completely unique and fresh. So they decided to use some of our gorgeous and velvety rental Gold Supervel Pleated Drapery legs. With these 23’h x 10’w panels (from our Timeless and Traditional Rental Collection), they would have the flexibility to create the same type of appearance for their stage, no matter how grand or intimate it might be. Lightweight yet durable, easy to hang, and effortless to tour with, these rental drapes were exactly what they were looking for.

As you can see from these images, the combination of brilliant lighting schemes, engaging décor, and of course with the talented artist and her band up front and center, this tour’s stage design turned out absolutely breathtaking…..Sincere, warmhearted, beautiful, and memorable, just like Kacey herself. You can check out a few more fabulous photos taken by a handful of exceptionally gifted band photographers on our new Flickr Gallery. We were so delighted to be a part of this show’s look, and would love to help you build a gorgeous stage for your upcoming tour, special event, and theatrical production, too!

Church’s Easter Production Exhilarates Parishioners With Extraordinary Kabuki Drop

By |June 25th, 2019|Clients, Products, Projects|0 Comments

A solenoid kabuki gag is an impressive special effect that you can add to any type of production or concert. Recently we were delighted to receive a video of one of these amazing occurrences from our client, Eastern Hills Community Church (of Aurora, Colorado). Their brilliant Technical Director and Production Manager Jason West had reached out to us looking for a memorable way for their team to build some excitement during this year’s Easter program. He wanted to create a special reveal using our trustworthy, lightweight, and easy-to-install Kabuki Solenoid Kits for their special Easter production that their in-person and online viewers would talk about for weeks to come. The sheer magnitude of the drop (30’h x 88’w) was pretty dramatic too, and so they needed a system that would be dependable and effective right from the start—there was no room for any errors with this reveal!

They started by using some of our rental clean and smooth White Poly Muslin backdrops to rear project their theatrical lighting and videos onto. Then they used our 25 head Kabu-Key Solenoid System to drop the drapes neatly and evenly to the floor at the perfect moment, revealing the band that had been eagerly waiting to come out and dazzle their parishioners. Utilizing some sensational lighting by the remarkable Lighting Designer David Neteland, they were able to amaze and engage their parishioners with some stunning lighting effects on the drapes themselves, followed by a sensational kabuki drop during their program that truly exhilarated the crowd.

You can see from these spectacular photos provided by Jason Crawford that the drapery fell cleanly and neatly to the stage—producing a breathtaking reveal for everyone watching. Our easy-to-assemble and even easier-to-use kabuki solenoid systems allow you to “reveal, drop and roll” just about any drapery element or backdrop. Have some fun with your audience by using a kabuki drop at your next concert, church production, or trade show special event! We have these systems available for rent, and they can be employed with your own existing backdrop, a new custom backdrop from Sew What?, or one of our beautiful rental backdrops. The sky’s the limit with how you can use one of these fabulous systems!

Jason West and his incredible production team at Eastern Hills did an exceptional job with this special church event, and we couldn’t have been happier to have been a part of it! Check out the video clip to see it live and in action, and don’t hesitate to contact us so that we can help you create an unforgettable reveal at your next special event, too.

Combination Of Mylar Rain Curtains And Stardrop LED Drapes Dazzle Theater Audience

By |May 28th, 2019|News|1 Comment

We love our remarkable clients all over the globe—both big and small—but are especially thrilled when we get to help local productions put on a truly phenomenal show. Helping provide them with gorgeous, versatile, and user-friendly specialty rental stage curtains can sometimes really help boost an already fantastic concert, production, musical, or other special event design right over to true excellence!

Recently we were very pleased to work with the exceptional Set Designer Brian Cole and visionary Director Rachel Snow-Fornari of Alhambra High School’s Moors Thespians. This renowned high school theatre department was putting on a production of Bob Fosse, Fred Ebb, and John Kander’s legendary “jazz and corruption” musical Chicago, with a brilliant group of talented students and support staff producing each element of this celebrated musical’s stage design from scratch.

Needing rental curtains for several key scenes in the production, Brian and Rachel decided to start by renting some of our dazzling 23’h x 10’w Silver Mylar Rain Curtains. Completely electrifying, these drapes took any color that their lighting designers splashed onto them, and helped add glamour, excitement, and energy to every scene they were in. From our Oh So Swanky Rental Drapery Collection, we have this style of scintillating silver drapery in both 10’h and 23’h sizes to fit most stages.

Next, they knew that this musical’s storyline wanted to convey several scenes as taking place outside under a clear, crisp night sky… So, they chose to use one of our Classic LED Stardrop rental drapes, too. Rich, velvety, deep black velour curtains with blue-white bright LED lights sewn right into them, these Stardrop drapes are a favorite for all types of productions. With full control over the intensity, speed, and duration of the “twinkle”, you can create the exact look of a beautiful starry sky right in the comfort of your indoor venue—no matter the weather outside. Available in both Classic LED and RGB Chameleon, and with grommets and ties on all four sides of the drapes, these adaptable curtains can be used on a multitude of stage sizes, styles, and designs.

Not only did their custom stage design look absolutely stunning, but the kids also did a tremendous job with the acting, singing, dancing, and choreography too (thanks to their incredible choreographer Tess Johnson). And to top it all off, The National Youth Arts Foundation bestowed upon them four major awards in this year’s 14th Annual National Youth Arts Awards ceremony (including Outstanding Ensemble, and Outstanding Lead and Supporting Lead in a Musical), and they were also nominated for 5 others. With more than 700 productions considered for these awards spanning 17 states, Canada, and the UK, these enormously prestigious commendations rightfully honored Alhambra High School’s students and staff for all of their hard work and efforts on this magnificent production.

With superb photos taken by event photographer Richard Chambers, you can see how flawlessly they utilized both stage curtains for this show—sometimes using them individually, and other times layering them with one another for an especially memorable look. Rent What? was extremely happy for all of their accolades, and are genuinely looking forward to working with Brian, Rachel, and the rest of the team at Alhambra HS on more of their upcoming productions, too. Let us also help support you with some captivating rental or custom-made stage curtains for your next big show, concert, production, concert tour, or any other special event that you have coming up, too.
