So Much To Still Be Grateful For…

By |December 15th, 2020|Company, Rent What Team, Sew What Team|1 Comment

Like many people around the country, we here at SW? always look forward to our yearly company holiday potluck and White Elephant gift exchange party. It’s always a completely fabulous time, filled with great food, lots of hearty laughter, and hugs galore. Unfortunately, this year has brought about many changes to our “normal” holiday social activities around one another—and having a gathering where we eat and sing and dance and laugh with one another is not something anyone should be doing right now. We are so grateful to still be able to work with each other following strict social distancing with health and safety protocols in place, and we are genuinely glad to be able to continue to keep the Whatters Family as safe and healthy as possible.

So instead, we wanted to showcase some photos from our incredible holiday party from last year—and hopefully also share with you some of our infectious joy! It was a really wonderful event, filled with all kinds of delicious sweets and hot chocolate, festive music and decorations, and some of the most incredible—and silly—white elephant presents we’d ever seen.

With a wildly eclectic variety of gifts being unwrapped, stolen, passed along from person to person, and sometimes taken back again, it was utterly comical from beginning to end! From beautiful holiday decorations to soft and fuzzy blankets to children-themed gifts to more “mature” content gifts (uhhh, can you say alcohol? lol), to everything in between, it was absolutely hilarious watching the gifts get passed from person to person until they found their “forever owner” after three steals.

What a fun stroll down memory lane….and knowing that these hard times too shall pass, it helps us to remember what amazing folks we are so lucky to still be able to work with on a daily basis. In light of the pandemic, Sew What? was retrofitted this past year and has been using our sewing team’s expert manufacturing skills to aide in offsetting the spread of the virus as much as we can, by building and selling custom-made face masks (and selling other PPE materials, too). And for those who learned to be extra crafty this year, we also now sell Do-It-Yourself-Mask Kits with all the materials needed to make 5 of your own dual-layered face masks, too.

All of these “Covid-19 Response” products not only help alleviate the burden of face mask and PPE shortages, but we also offer a selection of charity masks and PPE items, too–which automatically donate $1 to several important causes with every single selected item purchased. So now our company is fortunate to be able to still sell and rent our quality curtains to those who are lucky enough to have a need for them in today’s current (shall we say, “unstable”) event and touring industries, but we are so very pleased to report that our comfortable, unique, and affordable dual-layered designer and custom dual-layered face masks are now starting to get a name for themselves, too.

We here at Sew What and Rent What are just as eager and excited as everyone else is for the production industry to go back to the way it was “pre-pandemic”, but in the meantime we are sincerely thankful for all that we are blessed to still have. More than anything, we are so appreciative for all of the support our amazing clients have given us these past 10 months. And by this time next year, we are confident and looking forward to a time where we—and the rest of the country—will be back to having a crazy-fun holiday and end of the year celebration, where we will be able to eat tons of goodies, sing and dance to music in the warehouse, and laugh and hug each other once again. From our family to yours, we all wish you a very Happy Holiday season, a truly wonderful 2021, and that you and your loved ones stay safe and healthy. And please–for your sake and for everyone else’s–wear a mask!

Brand New Product from SW? Just in Time for the Holidays!!

By |December 7th, 2020|News|1 Comment

Our clients have spoken, and so we are very pleased to now offer everyone a 5 Mask Do It Yourself Kit with all of the supplies needed to make your own custom dual-layered face masks. These kits consist of pre-cut cloth face and liner pieces for 5 masks, coated wires for bridge-of-nose comfort, soft long cloth ties that can be tied around the ears or behind the head, and access online to a super-easy DIY instructional video. (You will just need to provide your own thread—and who doesn’t have spools of thread lying around the house just waiting to be used for something fabulous?).

These kits are a wonderfully thoughtful and unique holiday gift to send to those in your life who love to sew things for themselves. Or better yet, a great gift for yourself where you will be able to finally show off all of those crafting skills that you have been polishing all year long! You can even embellish the fabric before you sew—bedazzle on colorful crystal sequins or rhinestones, write your family members’ names with felt pens, add some fun designs with glitter fabric glue, or anything else you can think of to personalize each mask for someone special. Get the whole family involved—the kids will LOVE to help decorate them!

Taking the guesswork out of how to choose, measure, and cut the correct fabric for these dual-layered face masks will make sewing them an absolute snap (our simple how-to video will show you the way!). Each kit comes with face-fabric pieces in white, black, burgundy, royal blue, and pewter grey, so there will be something for everyone. Sewn with a pocket for a PM 2.5 Activated Charcoal Mask Filter, you can also add a pack to your SW? shopping cart, and thereby provide even more protection for your loved ones and those living in your community.

Buy yours now so that you can have them in hand in time for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, or any other upcoming holiday or occasion that you’d like to celebrate in a truly distinctive way. And with these all-inclusive kits providing supplies for five face masks at under $2 a mask—you just can’t beat the price!

Behind The Face Masks–How SW Has Adapted To The Changing Times

By |October 14th, 2020|Digital Printing, Masks, Products, Projects|0 Comments

The Global Covid-19 Pandemic has definitely put a “damper” on a lot of the entertainment industry’s regularly scheduled programs, concerts, and shows. There have been numerous changes going around SW?’s workroom lately….In light of the pandemic, Sew What? has been using our sewing team’s impressive and meticulous manufacturing skills to aide in offsetting the spread of the virus as much as we can, by building and selling colored, specialty, and custom-made face masks (and other PPE items) to help alleviate the burden of mask shortages that the country was starting to experience.

On top of also continuing to sell and rent fabulous drapes to new and existing clients who are lucky enough to have a need for them in today’s current environment, our sewing room has been completely retrofitted to build these extraordinary double-layered face masks as well. We are very pleased to report that our comfortable, unique, and affordable face masks are now starting to get a name for themselves, too! And we are thrilled to also be able to offer a whole selection of “Cover Up For A Cause” charity masks and PPE items, too, which automatically donate $1 to several important causes with every purchase.

This past spring, recent UCSB Journalism graduate Fabioloa Esqueda came to visit our facility and was able to speak with our company’s incredibly assiduous and industrious owner and President Megan Duckett, to hear all about the trials, tribulations, and uncertainties that have been the forefront of her thinking during this harrowing time for us all. Fabiola was also able to converse with some of our diligent manufacturing team members to hear about their own personal experiences during the county-mandated quarantine, too.

She ended up writing up an amazing piece entitled “Behind The Face Masks,” consisting of an engaging article and a gripping video. Both beautifully illustrate Sew What?’s transition in efforts for both our remarkable company leader, Megan, as well as our magnificent sewing staff–some of whom have been working with SW? for a decade or longer. We were honored to have been able to impart our story with Fabiola, and to have her share it with all of her readers too.

Please take a few minutes to read and watch this piece about our Whatter’s Family journey into the truly unknown. A lot of companies have had to retrofit their business models during these unprecedented times, and we feel privileged to have helped demonstrate that they are NOT alone. Our hope is that by continuing to work together, and by supporting local businesses in the touring and entertainment industries, we will get through this difficult time and come out the other end stronger than ever.

Proudly Introducing…Storage Solutions, the Sew What? Way!

By |September 1st, 2020|Company, News, Storage|1 Comment

Sew What? Inc is thrilled to announce our newest foray into the production world….Storage, the Sew What? way! Recognized as one of the most trusted stage and theatrical drapery manufacturers in the biz, Sew What? and Rent What? are renowned for manufacturing and renting dramatic theatrical drapes and soft goods used in major rock concerts, top fashion shows, and other artistic staged events. Owner and CEO of both companies, Megan Duckett, is now also extremely proud to offer production and tour managers the distinctive opportunity to help them finally be able to “take the stress out of storage.” Our brand-new, one-stop-shop storage center Put What Where? was especially designed with the ever-shifting touring world in mind.

This satellite facility is an all-encompassing storage facility and rest stop for the hard-working drivers, roadies, and backstage crew in our ever-expanding production industry. Conveniently located mere minutes from the SW? offices in Rancho Dominguez, this indoor/outdoor location will provide a crucial one-stop shop for tours and their squads. And it’s all done with the same “Extreme Service” and competitive rates that our customers have grown to depend on in an industry that is well-known for last minute, and often frustrating, changes.

President Megan Duckett says she is “especially excited to offer something exceptional and extraordinary to our backend production teams—the truck drivers, the roadies, the bus drivers, the PA’s–that has not previously been available to them.  We really wanted to recognize the hard work and efforts of not only the tour managers, but of ALL of the crew members that it takes to put on a successful tour—large or small.” First and foremost, this new 1.5 acre storage center offers our customers complete drapery service, so that their tour’s and production’s drapes will be ready to go for their next installment, whenever that might be (inspect, wash, dry, repair, flame-test, flameproof, fold, and ultimately, store).

We also offer a huge amount of storage space not just for tour drapery, but for production design elements, rigging, and set pieces, too. For smaller storage needs, we correspondingly offer a “Storage Cubby,” a fully enclosed 5’ x 5’ x 4’6” storage cube with locking zipper door, which is ideal for both personal or production storage of a slighter nature. In addition to these varieties of storage options, this easily freeway accessible site has handy bus and trailer parking, trailer storage, power hookups and a waste station for tour buses, and state of the art camera and alarm systems to ensure the complete security of all of your gear.

One of the most unique features of this new facility are the fabulous “Bedsit Rooms,” which provide drivers and roadies with a safe and comfortable place to rest and relax in between runs around town, or even overnight. Comprised of a full kitchen, washer/dryer, separate bathrooms (with shower), and WiFi access, these private quarters are what truly make this location stand out from the rest. Put What Where? ingeniously offers production teams a single, all-encompassing location to store their tour gear and soft goods, have a much-deserved, relaxing break, and then let the Put What Where? staff take care of the rest—all with the warm smiles and remarkable service that they have come to expect from everyone involved in the SW? organization.
