Truly Scrumptious Thanksgiving Feast Enjoyed By All

By |December 23rd, 2019|Company, Rent What Team, Sew What Team|1 Comment

Nothing says you’ve officially reached the holiday season than when you begin to feast like kings and queens with loved ones and friends alike. And undoubtedly, the entire team here at Sew What? / Rent What? love to be as seasonally festive as we can possibly be. And one of the most popular celebrations we look forward to having every year is our annual Thanksgiving holiday shindig!

Last month, we were thrilled to be able to genuinely give thanks to have one another, and celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with The Whatter Family in the favorite way we know how…..By having a party with tons of amazing food to choose from, high-energy music and dancing, and of course lots of selfies and laughter! Setting the scene was a super-long, covered table that spanned the complete length of our warehouse, with one of our gorgeous Classic Stardrop LED drapes adding a little sparkle and shine to the background.

Next we had the fantastic musicianship of renowned Southern California musical group Mariachi Alma Latina, who performed their beautiful and lively mariachi music for us to appreciate while eating a delicious catered meal from Rascal’s Teriyaki. A seemingly “atypical” choice for Thanksgiving, this restaurant’s heaping piles of delectable Chinese Chicken Salad, followed up with mouthwatering Chicken Teriyaki and Rice platters, appealed to everyone’s extremely happy taste buds. (And offered us a different flavor than the one we’d be eating at home for the next week straight) .

Once we finished our meals, the best was still yet to come……Dessert! This is where our “potluck genius” really shines, with each person bringing completely different type of sweet and scrumptious treats for all of their colleagues to enjoy.  From traditional holiday fare like apple and pumpkin pies, to more culturally adored flan and jello and fruit, to everyday mouthwatering goodies like brownies, cookies, cupcakes and lemon bars, there was enough “sugar and spice and everything nice” for the entire company to devour–for days.

After everybody had their fill (and then some), we all got to dance and sing along with the mariachi band to try and burn off some of the calories. It’s always a blast when music and dancing are on the agenda here! Reinvigorated, we were able to tackle our projects with renewed energy and passion, which always translates into an exceptional product. We hope that you had a fabulous Thanksgiving holiday this year with loved ones, too…as we could not be any more grateful to work in this diverse, innovative, and sometimes totally wild industry with–and for–our truly amazing clients!

Mixed Media Backdrop With Glowing Backlit Lettering Wows Audience

By |December 17th, 2019|Products, Projects|1 Comment

We were delighted to produce a backdrop recently for American rock band JIMMY EAT WORLD. A Dan Hadley stage and lighting design, this #backdrop was digitally printed onto an opaque, light blocking fabric with a step and repeat design. Our 10 foot wide Vutek direct printer produces bold and saturated color prints to showcase every style of art in a mural size. For this project, the durable opaque print fabric offered a full blackout, which hid all the goings-on in the background especially when being used during the day for festival events.

What made this drop so unique was that the band’s name was then cut out and replaced with a hand stitched translucent white polyester muslin allowing the lighting team to back light the band’s name for a bright and bold glowing effect! Check out how vividly the logo jumps off the drape and looks like it is glowing and “hovering” over the stage.

We love the effects that can be created with a custom “cut drop”. You can replace areas of a backdrop with any number of different materials, for a variety of lighting and staging effects.  Adding gobos and moving lights behind the cut areas can give a unique and eye-catching look. See in this picture how gobo effects are achieved with creative back lighting fixtures.

This backdrop even rocked hard for day events……..  Here is a short and fun video that showcases the backdrop and the staging in full effect.  Way to go, Dan Hadley!

At Sew What? Inc we love crafting textile art.  Let us know what your design is, and we will quote you for custom sewn backdrop made just for you. If you can dream it, we can sew it! Black Chrome Illusion Austrian Completely Illuminates Stage Design For Gala Event

By |December 9th, 2019|Products, Projects|1 Comment

Earlier this year we were delighted to be able to work with the brilliant and innovative Set Designer and Propmaster at Dallas Theater Center, John Slauson. He had a particular vision for what he sought to construct for their upcoming Centerstage Gala 2019 event, which they wanted to be absolutely extraordinary this year. With incredible Broadway performers Wade McCollum and Cedric Neal on hand, the entertaining evening would involve a lively cocktail hour in the stunning Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre followed by a delicious three-course dinner, a Tony-worthy performance, and a jubilant late-night dance party with one of the best bands in town.

Therefore they needed a curtain that would not only be strikingly gorgeous all by itself but would also be versatile enough to work beautifully as the backdrop for each and every part of the night’s festivities. John decided to rent our magnificent 30’h x 60’w Black Chrome Illusion Austrian drape from our Timeless and Traditional Drapery Collection as the main upstage curtain for this special event’s motif. Manufactured using an exquisite, satiny IFR fabric, and consisting of millions of tiny pewter and black squares, this curtain can look like “liquid chrome” in natural lighting and also perfectly reflect whatever colorful lighting you might want to implement—depending on what your own specific stage design calls for.

Using a couple of eye-catching stretch projection pieces to help embellish this unique staging, the overall event design John and his team created turned out completely spectacular, and they were extremely thrilled with how everything turned out. By artistically changing the colorful theatrical lighting being splashed onto the Austrian drape, they were able to better showcase an original and fresh look for all of the various segments of this special gala occasion. You can see by these fabulous photos taken by talented event photographer Dana Driensky that they did a stupendous job with the entire appearance of this entirely distinctive stage design.

We would love to help you fashion a genuinely superb stage design for your next upcoming production, concert, tour, or other special event by using some gorgeous rental drapes from one of our Specialty Drapery Collections. Reach out to us today and we’ll be glad to offer you helpful and beneficial advice on using our rental curtains, present you with loads of photos and video “inspirations” to help you get your creative juices flowing, and of course ultimately provide you with the most ideal, remarkable, and dazzling rental drapery you could ever envision for your exclusive event, too.

Chameleon LED Drape Brilliantly Complements Spectacular One-Of-A-Kind Wedding Event

By |December 3rd, 2019|Clients, Products, Projects|1 Comment

Sometimes adding a simple, but dramatic, element to your event design can make all the difference in the world towards “bringing it fully together.” A beautiful rental drape or backdrop can absolutely be that extra touch—and is an easy and affordable way to solidify your event’s overall motif. We here at Rent What? Inc., and myself especially, were thrilled to work with one of our regular tour and production managers Laura Jean “LJ” Hyde Clark with a drapery element for her upcoming nuptials to Patrick Clark in New Orleans, Louisiana. They wanted something that would go nicely with the completely unique theme of the wedding, in a very special venue—The House of Blues in New Orleans.

LJ had come up with the concept of their entire wedding extravaganza, down to the very last detail. They were going for a truly original “Great Gatsby/Freakshow” sort of vibe. With influences from Beetlejuice and Greatest Showman, and in primarily black and gold design elements, they wanted to create a spectacularly dark, spooky, and macabre atmosphere. Working with the venue’s remarkable in-house Lighting Director Austin Dominique, they decided to rent one of our versatile and dynamic RGB Chameleon LED drapes to help pull together their desired “distinctive” look.

This style of LED drape is wonderful for concert tours, theater productions, and other special events that you want to add a very unique touch to. Offering the option to use either the supplied on-drape controller and instruction manual to program the drape directly yourself, or to plug it into the in-house light board via the DMX cable provided means that it fits the needs of both small and large events and tours. This curtain allows you to change the color palette and speed of the blinking lights, and specify all sorts of fun and vibrant color patterns, too. You can literally have as many color schemes as you’d like, and chose from hundreds of gradations on its almost infinite color palette. Moreover, this can all be done ahead of time so that the drape would be all ready to go for your event or show.

As the logistics and event manager at the HOB, Kelly Riley executed all of LJ’s ideas visually on the day of the wedding superbly. And you can see by these FABULOUS photos taken by wedding photographer Willow Haley, LJ and Patrick’s one-of-a-kind dream design was a complete success! Having the memorable ceremony on the main HOB stage, followed by incredible performances by cirque and vaudeville-themed dancers and acrobats, and of course lots of enjoyable guest dancing at the reception, the Chameleon LED backdrop was the perfect complement to all of the various segments of this exceptional event. We were so pleased to be able to help provide a gorgeous rental drape for their big day, and wish them every bit of happiness that life can give this happy couple!
