It’s always really exhilarating for us here at Sew What? Inc. when our clients ask us to help them create their own completely original, never-been-done-before stage design by using our custom-sewn theatrical draperies. Having the right style and guise can make all the difference in a tour’s overall stage design. Working with creative tour managers, stage designers, and lighting directors continuously inspires us to aid them in any way possible for their special events.

This past spring, Sew What sales rep Marilyn Moss was extremely fortunate to be able to work with Richie Stembridge, who was wanting to create an innovative, fresh new look for an upcoming tour for the indie rock band The Decemberists. He also wanted to make sure that the theme still kept up with the quirky, whimsical style that this eclectic band was known and loved for by audiences all over the world.

He ended up providing us with some incredibly unique images, and had us custom sew 11 individual drapes for them (of which 9 were custom digital prints). We used Heavy Knit for the digital printed pieces, which is a great touring fabric because the wrinkles fall right out. The matte finish on the substrate also gives the graphics a clean, crisp presence, without adding a lot of shine to its general appearance. Starting with an electrifying custom digitally printed backdrop, they surrounded the proscenium corner pieces in which they “Velcro’d” onto custom-sized and shaped frames that they manufactured. Then they added distinctive tower pieces which they could use to enliven the various-sized venue stages that they performed at, adding even more depth and dimension to the motif. Embellishing the design with their own custom hanging skull print, they were able to have an unquestionably energizing stage–thereby giving each performance a truly exclusive look and feel.

This was a really exciting project for us to work on, and we couldn’t have been more impressed with how amazing it turned out. You can view more wonderful photos of this inventive stage design taken by enormously talented photographers at several concert halls across the country on our Flickr page. If you haven’t already, you need to catch this engaging band perform live as they make their way around North American and Europe this fall. We loved working on this project, and would really love the opportunity to help YOU create a one-of-a-kind stage design for your upcoming tour or production, too!
