Custom Digitally-Printed Backdrop Truly “Shines” On Rock Tour

By |September 26th, 2018|Products, Projects|1 Comment

Rock and Roll Tours are definitely our pride and passion….they are what got things going for us back in the beginning, and what we still absolutely love to be involved in to this day. Helping tour manager and stage designers get the ideal custom-soft goods for these tours and concerts always gets our staff super pumped up! And we especially love working with the same tours over and over again throughout the years, learning what they like, what works well for them, and what will look perfect behind the band or artist.

One of the groups that we’ve been honored to work with over the course of many years now is the incredibly electrifying American alternative metal and hard rock band, Shinedown. Known for putting on energizing shows that dazzle stadium audiences all over the globe, they wanted a simple—yet highly versatile–digital backdrop that would be road-friendly, tour-sturdy, and ready to hang right out of the bag.

#Repost @bkerchofficial: Thank you Luxembourg! You made us work for it, and we worked our asses off. Till next time.... #shinedown

They decided on a straightforward print of the band’s name in their “branding font”, in a dynamic golden color on an all-black background. Printed on FR Heavy Knit, they knew that this substrate would look clean and sharp, it would give the graphic a nice, matte finish, and that it would allow for any possible wrinkles it go while traveling would “fall out” at each venue after simply hanging it up. The brighter shade of the band’s name printed upon the much darker background also allowed for audiences of all sizes get to easily see and enjoy the drape from any distance to the stage (and was perfect for photo ops at every angle). Plus, their design team was able to have a lot of fun creating fresh, vibrant looks by merely splashing some colorful theatrical lighting onto the curtain for various segment of their shows.

You can also check out a few of the incredible looks that they created with some truly spectacular photos taken by talented photographers in our new Flickr gallery. Or better yet—see it in person while catching one of the group’s shows this fall on their current tour. We loved being able to assist this band with a memorable, striking digitally printed custom-backdrop for this band, and always look forward to working with their design team. Let us help you create a unique, unforgettable look for your next upcoming tour or show with some custom built (or gorgeous rental) draperies, too!

Meet the Sew What? and Rent What? Staff, Part 22: Kim

By |September 24th, 2018|Company, Rent What Team, Sew What Team|1 Comment

For our next installment of “Meet The Staff”, I am very happy to be able to officially introduce you to an incredibly important—and very much appreciated—member of our Sew What? / Rent What? family, Kim Curran. We’ve been extremely lucky to add Kim to the “Whatter Family” a few years ago as our Senior Purchasing Agent, and it’s been a perfect match ever since. Her diverse background as a buyer has immensely helped with her transition into this slightly different field of “theatrical fabric purchasing”, giving her an invaluable insight and perspective on successful vendor relations, and in turn, what we need to help make this company run smoothly—fabric! Please take a moment to read a little more about Kim, and learn why we are so thrilled to have her as an absolutely vital member of the SW team. ?

When did you first start at Sew What? What were you originally hired to do, and how have your duties changed since working here?

I started in May of 2015 as the Sew What Purchasing Agent, and have remained in that position ever since.

If you could take a vacation to anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

It would definitely be Italy—I love the food……All of the food! Pasta, fish, desserts, and everything in between. ?

What kind of work did you do before coming to Sew What?

I was a sporting goods buyer for a major national sporting goods chain—mostly focusing on fitness products of all kinds.

Do you have a special talent?

I love to dabble in baking and cooking of all varieties—and I try to use my powers for good and not evil. (my colleagues seem happy to take on my baking experiments) 😉

What is your favorite memory/circumstance/event from being part of the Sew What? family?

My husband and I had the most wonderful time attending a company dinner at the Bull Pen last year. It was a sit-down dinner at a spectacular steak house with much of the company there, and their spouses and significant others. And it was such a blast!

What is your favorite sports team/TV Show/Book/Movie?

I am not too die-hard of a fan for any particular sports team…. But I AM a huge fan of all kinds of cooking programs—especially the reality competition cooking shows. Give me some Chopped, Iron Chef, Hell’s Kitchen, or any baking contest on TV and I’m there!

What are some of your hobbies?

I love to cook—if you haven’t been able to tell by now! Main courses, desserts, snacks, and anything else that sounds yummy. My husband and I have newly started experimenting with Blue Apron (home delivered ingredients and recipes) which has really gotten me to wear my “chef hat” more than ever. It’s been a fun way for us to try out interesting new styles of food and cooking that we normally probably never would have done on our own.

Plus—more importantly–this summer we also added a new member to our family…our new puppy Stella! She’s a 7-month-old Chiweenie puppy (Chihuahua and Dachshund mix), and she has been the light of our life since we brought her home to be our furr-ever little girl. She has so much contagious energy, so much excitement over everything, and gives so much love to us both–and everyone she meets. It has been so much fun adding her to our family! ?

What project have you worked on recently that was interesting or challenging?

The most challenging aspect of my job is the short turnaround time we have for some of the orders for our clients—the tours especially. Many things can “go wrong” when it comes to procuring the exact right substrates that our clients are requesting, such as material availability, damages to the fabrics we receive, delays in shipping, size inaccuracies, etc. Thankfully, we have an amazing team here that will do everything they can to find a way to work through any issues that might come up in order to be able to get our clients the beautiful custom theatrical stage draperies that they are requesting — how they want them, and on time.

Anything more about your time here at SW?

There is a strong feeling of having a second family here at Sew What, Inc., which is just so nice to experience every day!

White Voile Rental Drapes Add Charm And Elegance To Gala Event Design

By |September 19th, 2018|Products, Projects|1 Comment

When our clients come to us with a design vision for a one-time very special occasion, we love being able to recommend the perfect rental drapes from our Specialty Drapery Collections to help them complete their distinctive event theme. And even better is when our rental drapes allow their lighting team to illicit the most wonderful and awe-inspiring looks imaginable.

Recently we were extremely honored to get to work with the talented Bob Higa with the Higa Group, who was an event producer for The National Associating of Catering Events (NACE) “One Award” 60th Anniversary Diamond Gala and Awards Ceremony at the NACE Experience Conference this past summer. What an exceptionally remarkable night it was, and we were thrilled that its overall motif turned out completely spectacular! Located in a gorgeous ballroom at a resort in sunny Palm Springs, California, Bob and the team at PSAV Lighting created a dazzling “old Hollywood look” to the layout that worked perfectly with the event’s otherworldly, captivating feel.

Working with superb event designer Wendy Dahl of Chic Productions, Bob knew that this event would have several segments that would each need to be memorable in their own unique way, while also still utilizing the same rental curtains for each part. They decided to use our gorgeous White Voile Pleated drapery legs and beautifully corresponding White Voile Swagettes from our Delightably White Drapery Collection. By hanging these along the back stage, and with PSAV’s innovative rear-lighting schemes, the audience was able to also visually enjoy the band playing right behind the drapes during the initial part of the program. Once the awards and presentations occurred later in the production, they were able to splash some colorful and radiant front-lighting effects to the staging—which added an entirely new and stunning appearance to the exact same drapery.

As you can see by the magnificent photos provided by skillful photographers Rand Larson of Morningstar Productions, Bill Liles of PSAV, and Bob Higa himself, the design for this remarkable event turned out absolutely breathtaking. You can check out additional gala photos taken by other members of NACE on the event’s Flickr page, and prepared to be utterly blown away! We were so thrilled with how this gala ceremony’s design turned out, and would love to help YOU create a one-of-a-kind look for your own upcoming special event, too.

Velvety Red Drapes Helped Set The Stage At Summer Church Event

By |September 13th, 2018|Products, Projects|1 Comment

Our rental drapery is not just suitable for large scale productions or long-term rock tours…. They are being utilized for numerous special events for our amazing clients, of all kinds and sizes. It always amazes us what a huge impact just simply adding a few striking rental theatrical stage drapes can have on the success of an event’s overall motif. This past June, we were excited to work with Derek Davis at Westside Family Church in Lenexa, Kansas on one of these types of really fun happenings at their church. They were looking to fashion an authentic movie theater “look and feel” in one of their huge auditoriums for a month-long series of movies and videos that they would be offering their congregation several weeks this summer.

Derek knew that building a simple, yet dramatic, proscenium for their “At The Movies” summer event would add a really distinctive touch to the overall movie motif they were trying to create for their eager and excited audiences. Using some of our velvety rental Red IFR Super-vel Pre-Pleated Drapery legs and a perfectly matching Pre-Pleated Red IFR Super-vel border, they were able to accomplish this design beautifully. Our Rockin’ Red Drapery Collection has a huge assortment of rental drapes to choose from, for every time of production, concert, graduation ceremony, convention, tour, and special event you can think of! Made up of Austrians, Venetians, Backdrops, Pleated Legs, Bi-Parting Grand Stage Drapes, Pipe Pocket Drapery, and Swags galore, this extremely unique assemblage of rental drapes can help turn your event into a true success! Contact one of our sales reps today to discuss all of the wonderful rental drapery options you have to choose from with the gorgeous rental theatrical stage drapes in our Specialty Drapery Collections.
