Metal Mesh Drapes Help Create Incredibly Dynamic Staging Design

By |August 7th, 2018|Products, Projects|2 Comments

We love seeing firsthand what a dramatic impact the perfect style of stage drapery can have on the general feel and look of a concert, production, convention, or other exclusive event. When they are constructed by using some of our gorgeous, eclectic rental theatrical curtains, well, that makes it extra special! And sometimes what makes it even more extraordinary is when our innovative and artistic clients think “outside the box” on what would typically be a “standard” stage design for their own particular event, thereby making a stage that genuinely dazzles their audience.

Recently, we were thrilled to work with the visionary production designer Jim McClellan from AEG Presents, a production partner with AEG Live Events. As the event’s scenic designer, he was interested in creating a memorable atmosphere for the very much anticipated yearly Barbershop Harmony Society International Competition. This high-profile occasion would bring in thousands of people all over the world to both participate in the weeklong phenomenon, as well as enjoy it in person and via live streaming from the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. This venue had a delightfully large stage set up, so he wanted to use some striking drapes from our Rental Specialty Drapery Collections that would both be stunning in and of themselves, and also versatile enough to really excite this enthusiastic audience from performance to performance throughout the entire competition.

Furthermore, Jim wanted to build an unforgettable stage using rental theatrical curtains that would give a little edginess to the overall appearance of the design, too. Using drapes from our Industrial Textures Collection, he decided on using a wide row of Metal Mesh curtains to be the main backdrop behind the singers and the rest of the stage embellishments. These adaptable drapes are perfect for travelling—they pop out of the hamper ready to hang. The more crinkles on this style of drape, the better to give the stage a wonderfully textured, dynamic façade. They also hung some lovely grey velour panels behind the drapes to add some more dimension and uniformity to the layout.

The LED panels and brilliant theatrical lighting provided by Kenny Kightlinger and Ryan Lilly of Logic Systems St. Louis lit up center stage with the event’s logo as well as terrifically colorful splashes of lighting throughout the shows, giving each group their own unique mood and character. Utilizing projection video supplied by Vision Visuals, and with the video control and cameras all supplied by TNDV, this outstanding production team were able to put together a truly one-of-a-kind, distinctive ambiance for every performance.

As you can see with these fabulous photos provided by photographer Jon Read and also from Jim McClellan, the stage design turned out absolutely breathtaking. We loved being a part of their design vision, and were completely blown away with how incredibly remarkable the set looked. We cannot wait to see what design he and his team with AEG come up with for next summer’s competition. Do not hesitate to contact one of our rental drapery specialists today so that we can help you create a magnificent display for your upcoming event or concert, too!

Custom Drapes Amplify Breathtaking Stage Design For Youth Conference

By |August 6th, 2018|Products, Projects|1 Comment

Custom Theatrical Drapery—that is Sew What?’s genuine passion, and what truly excites us to the core. Helping to actualize our clients’ one-of-a-kind design visions into a mind-blowing reality gives us a thrill like nothing else–the more creative and innovative the theatrical drapery design, the better! Recently our Senior Account Manager Shane Nelsen got to work with David Watts (Senior Projects Manager) and his pioneering team at Bartha Visual, on an event led by Krystie O’Brien (Show Producer). They came to Shane to help them by constructing some custom curtains for an exclusive stage design for the main arena at a huge youth event that would take place earlier this summer. Bringing approximately 33,000 teenagers to Houston for the ELCA Youth Gathering 2018 Conference at the NRG Stadium, this stage needed to both dazzle and captivate this enthusiastic audience throughout the week-long series of extraordinary concerts, engaging speeches, and memorable presentations.

They wanted a fabric that would showcase the team’s dynamic front-projected images and videos beautifully and flawlessly, and also be easy for their installation crew to work with. So David and Shane decided to have our “sewing magicians” cut and sew six separate curtains that were specifically built to blend with the edgy style that their designers were shooting for. Using IFR 15 oz. Encore Velour in White (for the projection surfaces) and Black (for the “negative space” in the profile cuts along their tops), these drapes became the perfect backdrop to showcase motivating and energizing motifs throughout the various performances during this truly unparalleled occasion.

Working with the imaginative Production/Set Designer Paul Keefer, incredibly spectacular lighting effects were projected onto these white panels by talented Lighting Designers Billy Davidson and Michael Hesmond all through the event– which completely electrified and enthralled their audiences. Photographed superbly by both Bartha’s Head Of Photography Max Rodriguez and Krystie O’Brien, you can clearly see just how exceptionally gorgeous and mesmerizing their stage design turned out for this successful convention.

We were completely blown away with how magnificent it all looked! Let us help take some of the stress out of your occasion by contacting one of our sales reps today so that we can help YOU create an absolutely unparalleled look for your upcoming special event, tour, or production, too.

Custom Mixed Media Drapes Energize Crowds On Rock Tour

By |August 1st, 2018|Products, Projects|1 Comment

A fantastic way to construct something genuinely one-of-a-kind for your production, concert, or trade show is to have our skilled sewing staff custom sew a mixed media piece that comes directly from your own original vision. Layering different substrates on top of one another can create a completely unique appearance for your backdrops and other theatrical soft goods. Recently Megan Duckett worked with the tremendously creative Paul Guthrie with the Nine Inch Nails current “Cold and Black and Infinite” World Tour, to help fashion a distinctive look for the band’s concert tour.

The design called for a specific hand-painted pattern on the drapes to showcase during parts of the performances, so we started with a Heavy Weight Cotton Muslin as the base fabric for this textured 40’w drape and its corresponding 12’w drapery legs. This material is quite popular for our clients as the wrinkles tend to “fall right out” once hung up at each venue, and the open weave structure of the fabric allows for paint to adhere nicely to it, too. Sharkstooth Scrim was then layered on top of the painted muslin, giving the curtains a textured, almost “coarse” quality to them. The scrim layer was also scenically painted, enhancing the dramatic effect even more. The tour lighting design, which called for the use of a variety of colored lighting schemes and creative image shadows, definitely gave the overall presence of these edgy drapes a truly extraordinary look. Check out more photos of this undeniably exceptional backdrop here on our Flickr page, too.
