RIP Prince

By |April 25th, 2016|News, Projects|1 Comment

It is with heavy hearts that we lose musician and client Prince.  Looking back over the years and the many projects that we have done with this artist, we are all just silenced by this unexpected and tragic loss.

One memory of significance was creating all the studio draping for his temporary residence in Los Angeles during the recording of the album 3121.

This call came in on a Sunday – Designers for the temporary residence of artist Prince required sound absorbent draperies for the windows and studio in the Hollywood home. The large quantity of draperies was designed, quoted and delivered within 3 days!

The most exciting moment of course (aside from the opportunity to work on a project for such a high profile artist) was that the home was then used as the setting for the album / CD insert! So there we are – Sew What? Inc in, and on, Prince’s album titled “3121”.

Truly a one of a kind genius, Prince was electrifying on stage. He will be greatly missed.

Meet the Sew What? and Rent What? Staff, Part 18: Marilyn

By |April 19th, 2016|Authors, Rent What Team, Sew What Team|2 Comments

Next in our “Meet the SW? Staff” blog series, I am thrilled to be able to introduce you to one of the most earnest, hard-working, and humorous staff members to ever join the “Whatters” family—Marilyn Moss! With many years in this industry, she offers a unique point of view regarding all things related to theatrical soft goods. Her sincere enthusiasm for her job, her infectious energy, and her willingness to learn as much as possible, have all made her one of our company’s most impassioned employees. Please take a moment to learn a little bit about this funny, creative, and genuine person by reading, in her own words, what excites her about working here at Sew What? Inc.!

When did you first start at Sew What? What were you originally hired to do, and how have your duties changed since working here?

I started the end of May 2015. I had applied for the purchasing position, and was absolutely stoked to be offered a position in sales and rentals. I was thrilled to be given an opportunity with this company— plus this also gave me a great reason to move out of the (San Fernando) Valley!  ;-).

If you could take a vacation to anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

The world is so big with so many wonderful places to explore but there are two places I’d really like to go to. Having sold the “Queen’s hot sticky buns” at the Renaissance Faire and having studied their history – I’d really like to visit England. Rome is another place I’d like to go to. I am fascinated with their history and architecture. I would like to see and experience what I’ve read so much about.

What kind of work did you do before coming to Sew What?

Though I’ve been in “the business” for many years, I was actually working at a cemetery before coming here. I worked in the office doing data entry and assisting the owner manager, but I also helped people find family graves; people looking up family history. It was quite fascinating. Founded in the late 1800’s, the history of this particular cemetery was amazing. I really did learn lot! The main question I got from friends – “Isn’t it weird working there?” Not at all, actually! It was very …peaceful. Almost like working in a beautiful park.

Do you have a special talent?

I’m sure I have something…. (lol) Acting was once my passion and I hope to get back into it some day on a limited scale. Doing community theatre is so much fun. Dancing and writing especially. I also have a knack for organizing things, and am often found helping wayward friends and family with the organization of their closets, kitchens, anything!

What is your favorite memory/circumstance/event from being part of the Sew What? family?

I like the fun stuff we do together as a group – picnics, pot lucks and the pictures that get taken of everyone and posted online. I like the fun creations we make here, too. It’s amazing some of the things we’ve custom-built since I’ve been here. The sense that everything we do is a group effort; that everyone is important to each and every job on some level helps creates cohesiveness in the company. And I’m learning a lot! There is always something new to learn. (Oh, and I also just got a new SW? company shirt. Thanks!!)

What is your favorite sports team/TV Show/Book/Movie?

Favorite sport:  Formula one racing. The cars are amazing. To be able to go to Monte Carlo or Manza – what a thrill that would be! Can I add that to places I want to visit someday? 😉

Favorite movie: “It’s A Wonderful Life.” Is there anyone out there who hasn’t seen this movie? If you haven’t, I highly recommend it. It’s amazing how connected everyone truly is, and you never know what kind of an affect you can have on another person’s life.

What are some of your hobbies?

Writing is something I enjoy doing – Creating characters and stories – it must be the actor in me.

What project have you worked on recently that was interesting or challenging?

One of the projects I worked on where I felt a true sense of accomplishment was the job we did for J. Berry Nursery. Not only were we able to provide a printed drop with LED lights and keep it priced within their budget, but the customer also won for Best 10’ x 20’ Exhibitor using the drape that we were able to create for them from their own unique design vision. That was very exciting, and extremely satisfying!

Anything more about your time here at SW?

I know that I’ve already said this, but I’ve been in this business for many years and there’s always something new and different to learn about it, and I am so thrilled to be learning so much from my work here at Sew What? Inc.!

The Smaller Side of the Austrian Curtain

By |April 13th, 2016|Products, Projects|1 Comment

Ever consider using an Austrian curtain, but think that your stage design area might be a little too small?  For our customer Visual Elements’ inspired design, we had just the right solution.  Using our rental 12’h x 10’w White Textura Austrian Zip Walls tied onto standard pipe and base hardware, some beautifully classic – yet modern – sitting areas were created for a recent special event.  The mixture of our beautiful traditional drapery with some rich and creative theatrical lighting make their design vision come to life, even in their smaller space, and helped make their event turn into a great success.

The amazing concept of our innovative non-operable Austrian Zip Wall Draperies is just that– they actually ZIP together. This means they are incredibly versatile, and can be used as individual panels, as in these beautiful photos taken by Joe Hodge (Producer at this event, from Visual Elements), or zipped together to create wider panels or a wall-length backdrop.  Large OR small—our versatile and decadent Austrian Draperies can add a glamorous, vintage look to any set design. Contact our helpful sales representatives today to find out which would be best for YOUR next special event!

Masking Drapes for Conventions and Car Shows

By |April 11th, 2016|Products|1 Comment

Year round we see large scale car shows and conventions planned and executed at various conference centers and arenas around the country. These events are typically on an extremely large scale, and require hundreds, even thousands, of running feet of masking drapery.

The trim heights in these convention centers can run anywhere from 25 feet high up to 60 feet high – making for a massive amount of masking drapery when it comes to dressing out the show floor perimeter.

At Rent What? Inc we have a massive inventory of large flat black flame retardant masking drapery, that is ready to ship and hang with an easy tie top attachment. Bear in mind however that you will want to book and reserve your inventory early if you have a large scale masking event on the books. Like anything else, while our inventory is impressive – it is not endless….. so get in early so that we can be sure to satisfy your masking rental needs.

Learn more about of selection of rental masking drapery by visiting our rentals website We’re committed to providing an ultimate experience in both drapery rental products and customer service.

Meet the Sew What? and Rent What? Staff, Part 17: Andrea

By |April 7th, 2016|Company, Rent What Team, Sew What Team|2 Comments

Next in our “Meet the SW? Staff” series, I’d LOVE for you to meet one of the most earnest, funny, hard-working, intelligent, and helpful people we’ve ever been lucky enough to have work here at Sew What? Inc. /Rent What? Inc. Andrea Fraser was hired on to be a temporary receptionist during some issues we were having with our phone system last summer, but once the phones were fixed, we literally could NOT IMAGINE not having her stay on and become a permanent part of our company! She brings such great enthusiasm, creativity, and attitude to our daily lives here, she has a great phone presence and attitude so that callers always hear a friendly and helpful voice, and she has quickly become the “go to” person for anything that ANY ONE of us here might need some help with, everything from small tasks to huge projects, and always with a sincere smile on her face. Please take a moment and read, in her own words, a little bit about Andrea, and you’ll see why we are so thrilled to have her as a part of our Whatter’s family!

Andrea F

When did you first start at Sew What? What were you originally hired to do, and how have your duties changed since working here?

I started at Sew What? in July 2015. I was hired as a receptionist and overall assistant to all of the staff here needing a little bit of my help. My mission and goal is to greet and assist anyone in need of backdrops, stage curtains and/or theatrical drapery. Call in and press 0, and you will hear the magical symphony that is my voice swiftly and accurately getting you over to the appropriate person to assist you!

If you could take a vacation to anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I would love to go to Scotland and Costa Rica. I’d love to go to Scotland because so much of my family’s history is there. And of course I would also love to go to Costa Rica because I want to go hiking and adventuring in the jungle and beaches to see all of the incredible natural beauty that is there to see!

What kind of work did you do before coming to Sew What?

Just before becoming a part of the Sew What Team, I worked as a Sales Assistant/Receptionist for a company that rented gym equipment! I did everything from customer service, collections, tech support, QC and shipping. I learned all about the equipment that we rented and so much more. I have made a living by being pleasant, charming and easy to talk too. This makes receptionist the perfect career choice for me! I am naturally a people pleaser and like to be overly pleasant. It came down to two career choices for me. Receptionist or Carnival Barker.

Do you have a special talent?

Dog whisperer. Cat tamer. Snake charmer and breeder (not kidding! I breed Ball Pythons). I can give you useless and in depth facts about animals you’ve never heard of!  I also have some pretty nifty dance moves.

What is your favorite memory/circumstance/event from being part of the Sew What? family?

I’ve actually known the Sew What? family for quite a lot of years. I’m just excited to be a part of the family now on a day to day basis! Working with all these fine people has really been a joy, and I’m learning so much about all things related to drapery and the special event and touring industries.

My favorite event had to be my first one which was the Tail Gate Party. Lots of food, music and good company all being enjoyed outside on a warm summer’s day.

What is your favorite sports team/TV Show/Book/Movie?

I could go on and on but I’ll limit this down to a reasonable word count. Favorite TV Shows include Walking Dead, New Girl, American Horror Story, and Firefly (I still mourn its cancellation. *Never forget!*). I’ll read anything fantasy/sci-fi based: Stardust, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Hobbit, and Harry Potter. (Don’t judge me, please!) Movie selection includes Princess Bride, Back To The Future, Robin Hood Men In Tights, Galaxy Quest, Ghost Busters, Groundhog’s Day, and Megamind, to name just a few.

What are some of your hobbies?

Adventure! I love to be outdoors. Hiking, Camping, Kayaking, Snake/Lizard Hunting (Catch and release only), tide pools, and beach. I also have two beautiful (giant!) German Shepherds that I try to take everywhere with me.

If I’m not Adventuring! I am sitting with a good book or watching my favorite TV shows.

I love to sing! Though you will notice I did not mention this in the “special talent” portion. (There is a very good reason for that.) 😉

Ball python breeding!

I also have a Kawasaki ZX6R that I love to take out cruising along the coast line. Look out for my leopard spotted helmet and back pack– That’s me!

Anything more about your time here at SW?

Honestly, these are the best group of people anyone could wish to work with. I feel very fortunate to know them and work alongside them. They are hardworking, funny, and really love what they do– and it truly shows in our amazing products, our customers’ sincere satisfaction, and in the overall vibe of this company!
