So, your set design calls for a gorgeous set of stage drapery, but your budget doesn’t allow for the purchase of a full set of custom stage curtains. Consider combining rented specialty drapery with purchased custom drapery to maximize your budget and get the look you want within your budget. To inspire you, here are two projects in which designers successfully did just that. Both designs utilize drapery made of Pewter Textura, but as you can see, the two sets look completely different!
Tour designers for the 2013 tour of renowned Canadian recording artist Nelly Furtado began implementing their set design vision (shown above) by choosing several pleated legs and swags in Pewter Textura from the Rent What? Industrial Textures series of specialty rental drapery. To further personalize the look, custom sheer swags in Aqua Gold Shimmer Organza were purchased from Sew What? Lastly, Black Encore Masking Drapes (also rented) were used to create negative space on and off stage, further emphasizing the beautiful specialty drapery and the gorgeous lighting design.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2013 Induction Ceremony
For the 2013 Induction Ceremony, held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, Pewter Textura was the star of the design. The set design, shown above in this video of inductee Heart, utilized a large number of drapes and swags, all in Pewter Textura. To maximize the design budget, rental and purchased drapery was combined to make one impressive set. Over 500 yds of fabric were utilized to build custom drapery for the center reveal area, with 30′ h rental drapes chosen as the main fill drapes.
It’s amazing how two projects, both using the same rental drapes, can look so different by the addition of custom drapery. Imagine the huge range of options that you could have for your set design by choosing specialty rental drapery and then adding custom drapery options as well.
