In our next installment of “Meet The Staff”, I am happy to introduce you to one of our more recent hires, Andrea Rennard. She is the Graphics Coordinator for Sew What? and has been a very busy and productive member of our team since last summer when she first arrived. Her incredible background in graphic design, her in-depth eye for detail, and her willingness to keep working at a project until it’s perfect in the eyes of the client make her a truly valuable asset to everyone here. Please read on to learn a little more about Andrea and see why we are so lucky to have her as part of the “Whatters” family!

When did you first start at Sew What?/Rent What? What were you originally hired to do, and how have your duties changed since working here?

I was hired in July of 2012 to be the on-site Graphics Coordinator at Sew What? Inc. I receive all of the artwork from our clients, and check the specs to make sure it is able to be printed at the desired dimensions–the larger the backdrop, the more challenging it can be. In addition, I check how the colors were engineered to ensure we have the best, richest colors for the desired substrate. After I check the artwork, I provide proofs for the client. Once the client signs off on the proof, I schedule it to be printed accordingly with the due date, check to see if it needs to be flame-proofed, and handle any of the other artwork that may need to be printed.

If you could take a vacation to anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Well, I LOOOOVVE to travel, so this is a tough one to narrow down to just one place. I would have to say the next major international destination I would like to go to is Thailand. I’ve heard nothing but how amazing and beautiful it is there. I love culture in general and try to travel abroad as often as possible, and Thailand seems so exotic. Great weather, amazing food, and affordability– what more could I ask for? When I’m fortunate enough to make it there, I plan on drinking only bottled water though

What kind of work did you do before coming to Sew What?/Rent What?

Prior to Sew What?, I worked in the art dept. for various studios in the film industry where we did all of the graphics and set design. I went to film and theater school back in Orlando and came to LA to pursue “The Dream.” I had a very enjoyable and rewarding career in film and have worked on films like “Angels and Demons”, “Transformers 3”, and most recently “Argo”. I loved working in the film industry, but I feel very fortunate to have such an amazing opportunity to work at Sew What? and fulfill my first love—which is live entertainment. On any given day, I am working with some of the biggest bands in the music business…FUN stuff!

Do you have a special talent?

My background in graphics and set design.

What is your favorite memory from being part of the Rent What? family?

It has to be the Christmas party of 2012. It was filled with lots of good food, dancing, and games. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed as much at a Christmas party as I did that day–lots of silly moments, and a great way to build camaraderie! I give major props to Adam and Megan (owners of the company) for making it such a unique and enjoyable holiday celebration, and best of all, it was great that it included both the warehouse and the office staff.

What is your favorite sports team/TV Show/Book/Movie?

I’m a native Orlando Florida girl, so have been a die hard Orlando Magic fan since I was a kid…Through the good times and the bad. 😉 My parents have had season tickets since the beginning, and I love attending games when back in “O-town” or when they are out here playing against the Lakers or Clippers. My favorite movie is Shawshank Redemption–I think it is a brilliant film, and I can watch it over and over again.

What are some of your hobbies?

I’m an avid runner and run several times a week and even did a half marathon 2 years ago (although I was definitely at the back of the pack). Otherwise, I love anything dealing with the arts– I like to check out local art galleries as often as possible, and even draw in my free time.

What project have you worked on recently that was challenging or interesting?

The most challenging project I have worked on recently was an order for a hugely popular country star which consisted of enormous backdrops, and it was top priority that the blacks in each tile matched exactly the same. When printing such large tiles, there is always room for inconsistencies, so it really kept me on my toes examining each tile as they were printed.

One of the most interesting projects I’ve worked on recently was for a special flooring (similar to Marley) that was digitally printed on and then used as a catwalk. This job was for one of the most popular bands in the world, so I was very excited to have the privilege of laying up the graphics on this project, which will be used for their upcoming tour. In addition, this was my first experience digitally printing flooring, so I was excited to expand my professional knowledge in this area, too.
